IN THE BEGINNING...

This Tricentennial TV project was born in the early part of 2016. And there have been a lot of twists and turns and cliffhanger moments ever since. Frankly, that doesn’t surprise us. Anybody who works in film or broadcast production will tell you that, in addition to a Plan A, you’ve got to have a Plan B—and maybe a few other letters from the alphabet tossed in there, too.
But no matter how many unexpected events have happened along the way, one thing has been absolutely consistent—and constant: There are a lot of San Antonians who are coming forward, wanting to help us. They ask if we’ve heard about this uncommon tale, or that little-known fact. They tell us about books and articles and websites we should check out. They bring up remarkable incidents, ancestors, neighbors and neighborhoods. They tell us where old photos and documents might be—or sometimes they simply show up with them!
Their love and pride and enthusiasm for this city is astounding. And we are beyond grateful for it. That’s why saying ‘thank you’ to them feels like a very inadequate response. Maybe thanking these folks for how they have helped would be better. So here goes: Thank you for instinctively understanding that many people don’t really relate to history; many seem to think it’s irrelevant to their daily lives. However, this can be turned around when they watch our colorful—and often offbeat—stories. They can see for themselves how the past relates to their own present-day lives and experiences. Especially when it comes to San Antonio. Here, history is literally all around them—and all of us—all the time. All those hundreds of years of yesterdays are still shaping today. As author William Faulkner put it, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past. “
Again, our sincere and deep gratitude to all those who are helping us pull this off. Our little production team of San Antonians thanks you from the bottom and the top of our hearts—and all the places in between. Each of you is making a difference for the city you love—and that loves you back. Because of that, you are the heartfelt story behind the stories here.
